What influenced my interest in horticulture and my
plans/goals for the future
by Juliet Taylor
My love for growing plants began when I was 12 years old. I was given freedom to care for and plant the area around the back patio. The planting area was prepared and a Honey Locust was chosen and planted. It was chosen because of the the lacy, filtered shade it would provide. Seeds for Zinnias and several 6-packs of Petunias were purchased to add color. As the flowers grew and blossomed I loved to watch the wildlife attracted to the blossoms. I was hooked.
Years later when my husband and I purchased our first home, the landscaping and a garden were the first things addressed. Many things were learned in the process of the successes and failures of those yard and garden adventures.
Every chance I get, I enjoy attending as well as teaching, classes about gardens; planning a garden, preparing the garden site, planting, caring for edible and ornamental gardens, and pruning trees, etc.
My life has been enriched by plants. My goals for the future are 1) to help others with their garden and plant questions so they experience horticultural success and 2) help others to love plants and make them part of their lives. With additional schooling, I would like to do this as a county extension educator. What a great opportunity to influence people young and old by encouraging them to start where they are, add some knowledge, and grow with their plants.
Although this video is not about horticulture, it is an example of my teaching.
